Hyett Education are recruiting Freelance STEM workshop Instructors to lead, and Freelance STEM Workshop Assistants to support, a range of computing and science workshops across the UK. We are a small team making a big impact and looking to extend our capacity and reach in schools.

We are looking to recruit STEM Workshop Instructors and STEM Workshop Assistants to deliver and/or support the delivery of workshops in the following areas:

  • London and the Home Counties

  • North-West England (to cover Merseyside, Greater Manchester. Cheshire Lancashire & Cumbria)

  • North-East England (to cover Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham & North Yorkshire)

  • Central Belt of Scotland (inc. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayrshire, Fife etc)

  • West Midlands

  • East Midlands

Role Summary

We are looking for enthusiastic, outgoing individuals who are passionate about providing and supporting stimulating STEM educational experiences for children aged 5-14 years old. For the most part, this means delivering/supporting LEGO robotics and coding workshops, and drone coding workshops in schools.

The majority of work assigned will be within the successful candidate’s region, although we may also offer opportunities to support events further afield, with additional compensation. There is an expectation that successful candidates would be willing to travel up to 2 hours each way to deliver/support events within their region.

Freelancers will need their own car/van - all fuel, travel and meal expenses will be covered by Hyett Education. We may provide a company vehicle in certain circumstances.

Job Title 1: STEM Workshop Teacher (with QTS) or Instructor (without QTS)

The primary role of a STEM Workshop Teacher or Instructor is to facilitate school workshops. STEM Workshop Teachers/Instructors will:

  • Lead STEM workshops in schools (predominantly LEGO robotics and drone coding, but there are other workshops we are happy to train candidates to deliver);

  • Prepare session equipment prior to the event and be responsible for transporting it to the client’s venue. This involves making sure equipment is up-to-date, charged, maintained to a high standard and ready-for-use in session;

  • Dutifully represent the values of Hyett Education and our Partners by delivering with high professional standards (see more in ‘ideal candidate’);

Job Title 2: STEM Workshop Assistant

The primary role of a STEM Workshop Assistant is to support the STEM Workshop Teacher/Instructor to facilitate school workshops. STEM Workshop Assistants will:

  • Support the delivery of STEM workshops in schools by engaging with students to provide help, guidance and encouragement throughout the session;

  • Support the STEM Workshop Teacher/Instructor to prepare resources, equipment and the workspace before the students arrive for the session;

  • Support the STEM Workshop Teacher/Instructor to inspect and monitor equipment pre-pack down, to pack down equipment so that is as ready-for-use (excluding charging) for the next session;

  • Contribute content for Hyett Education and our Partners’ social media channels by taking task-appropriate photos/videos (when there is consent to do so) of the students work and progress within a session, for evidence of learning and for marketing.

  • Dutifully represent the values of Hyett Education and our Partners by supporting with high professional standards (see more in ‘ideal candidate’);

Who is our ideal candidate?

The ideal candidate will be responsible and reliable, punctual, presentable, and personable. They will be able to build positive relationships with children, school staff and Hyett Education colleagues. They will be able to offer exemplary customer service, and have the drive to constantly reflect upon and improve the service they are delivering. Leading candidates must be able to work well with children and be a good role model to them throughout the workshop experience.

Subject knowledge in Science, Computing, Engineering and Mathematics is desired but not essential. We will put in place a training programme for any candidates that need support with this content in relation to the workshops they will be delivering.

Our current team consists of former teachers, teaching assistants and stage performers. We welcome new skills and talents and encourage anybody with an interest in STEM industries and careers, and from any background, gender and ethnicity to apply.

Hours & Pay:

A typical day would be 7.45am-3.30pm onsite with workshop hours between 9am-3.15pm with children. We expect staff to arrive onsite at 7.45am to setup, and typical pack down is 15-30 mins. There may be up to 2 hours travel each way. There may also be work further afield with an overnight stay being necessary - additional expenses will be covered in these circumstances, plus additional pay, which will vary.

Workshops are typically booked between 1 month to 9 months ahead of delivery and we’ll guarantee compensation to freelancers booked to an event, even if there is a last minute cancellation by a school.

  • This is a freelance role, with the possibility of offering part-time or full-time contracted roles further down the line to those who perform well and have an interest in a more permanent role within our team.

  • Pay across both roles is based on experience, training, qualifications, level of responsibility undertaken and location.

  • STEM Workshop Teachers (with Qualified Teacher Status) will be paid from £150/day.

  • STEM Workshop Instructors (leading sessions without QTS) will be paid from £125/day.

  • STEM Workshop Assistants will be paid £90-£115/day

  • Freelancers are expected to invoice us bi-weekly or monthly for completed work and we will make payment within 14 days.

  • Freelancers are expected to pay their own tax through Self Assessment.

Annual Leave, Sick Leave and Maternity Leave:

There is no annual leave, sick leave or maternity leave entitlement in this role. As a freelancer we can offer you work but you are under no obligation to accept it as you are not employed by Hyett Education.

Essential requirements:

- A clear Enhanced DBS. Applicants without a clear Enhanced DBS when checked will be rejected.

- A valid UK driving license with access to your own vehicle, capable of carrying tech equipment to and from sessions.

Desirable training, qualifications and experience :

- Paediatric Emergency First Aid*

- Safeguarding/Child Protection*

- Experience working with children

*Training will be provided for these as part of successful candidates induction.
