Paediatric First Aid Training
Recently, our team here at Hyett Education took part in a Paediatric First Aid training course.
Phillipa, Sarah and Rachael practicing using a Defibrillator.
We spend a lot of time in the company of young people, and although we often aren’t responsible for administering First Aid, our team wanted to know what to do in an emergency, hoping our actions could one day help to save a life.
What did we cover:
1. Assess emergencies and decide on actions
Our instructor, Jason, talking to us about the importance of quick and effective CPR.
2. Aid a baby/child who is unresponsive (breathing or not)
3. Respond to seizures
4. Help with choking
5. Control bleeding
6. Treat shock (blood loss or anaphylaxis)
7. Respond to an electric shock
8. Treat burns or scalds
9. Manage suspected fractures
10. Handle head, neck, or back injuries
11. Respond to poisoning
12. Remove foreign objects (eyes, ears, nose)
13. Treat eye injuries
14. Treat bites or stings
15. Manage heat or cold exposure.
After a full day of in-person training and a full day of e-learning, we now all feel more equipped with the skills to handle medical emergencies involving children, potentially saving lives and minimising harm.
We felt this course was particularly important for us as teachers and instructors, as this has given us the confidence and knowledge to respond effectively to common childhood injuries and illnesses until professional medical help is available.
