School Feedback

What Schools in Somerset Say

Direct feedback from teachers and schools who have hosted our workshops.

An engaging STEM positive experience that allowed the students to explore equipment and ideas we cannot normally explore in class.

It was a fantastic workshop and was really well thought out to make it as engaging as possible for the students.

What an excellent way to engage younger teenagers.

I loved all the problem solving. It was challenging, but really good.

Building the robot piece by piece was fascinating, even coding it was fun and it got my mind thinking.

Our instructor was calm and gave clear instructions. The students responded well to him and he was very supportive in solving issues or problems students may be facing.

The workshop was absolutely fantastic and accessible for all pupils.

Teachers said the children were really engaged and loved the sessions!

STEM in Somerset: Why It Matters for Your Students

A History of Innovation

Somerset has a proud STEM heritage that spans agriculture, engineering and energy. The county's wool and textile industries drove early mechanisation, and the Somerset Coal Canal, opened in 1805, was one of Britain's pioneering canal engineering projects. Bridgwater's brick and tile works powered the county's construction industry for generations. In the twentieth century, the Royal Ordnance Factory at Puriton near Bridgwater became a major centre of munitions manufacturing during the Second World War. The Fleet Air Arm museum at RNAS Yeovilton documents the county's long association with military aviation and aerospace engineering.

Inspiring STEM Role Models

Arthur C. Clarke, the science fiction author and futurist who conceived the concept of geostationary communications satellites, was born in Minehead, Somerset. His vision of space technology and telecommunications shaped an entire industry. John Stringfellow, a Chard lace maker, built and flew one of the world's first powered aircraft models in 1848, decades before the Wright Brothers. More recently, the engineers at Leonardo Helicopters in Yeovil have designed and built some of the most advanced military and civilian helicopters in the world, carrying on a tradition of aerospace innovation that stretches back decades.

Somerset’s STEM Economy Today

Somerset's STEM landscape is anchored by aerospace, defence and nuclear energy. Leonardo Helicopters in Yeovil is one of the UK's most important aerospace manufacturing sites, designing and producing the Wildcat, Merlin and AW159 helicopters for military and civilian customers worldwide. Hinkley Point C near Bridgwater is the UK's first new nuclear power station in a generation and one of the largest construction projects in Europe, creating thousands of engineering and technology jobs. The Gravity smart campus near Bridgwater, built on the former Royal Ordnance Factory site, is being developed as a major centre for advanced manufacturing, clean energy and technology.

STEM Career Pathways for Young People

Somerset offers distinctive STEM career pathways. Leonardo Helicopters provides apprenticeships and graduate roles in aerospace engineering, software development, avionics, and mechanical design. The Hinkley Point C project has created thousands of roles in nuclear engineering, construction technology, project management, and environmental science, with a major investment in local apprenticeship programmes. The Gravity campus is attracting advanced manufacturing and clean technology companies. Bridgwater & Taunton College and the University Centre Somerset offer programmes in engineering, computing, and construction technology. Agricultural technology is also a growing sector in this predominantly rural county.

Investing in STEM Education in Somerset

Somerset is home to two of the most significant STEM projects in the UK right now: the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station and the Gravity smart campus. Leonardo Helicopters has been designing world-leading aircraft in Yeovil for decades. The career opportunities in engineering, energy and technology are real and growing. Yet Somerset remains a predominantly rural county where many young people feel that STEM careers are something that happens in cities. For headteachers, STEM workshops are about changing that perception and showing students that some of the most exciting engineering and technology work in the country is happening right here in their county.
