STEM in Leeds: Why It Matters for Your Students

A History of Innovation

Leeds has a rich STEM heritage rooted in the engineering innovation that powered the Industrial Revolution. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Leeds became a global leader in textile manufacturing, with engineers pioneering mechanised flax spinning and woollen cloth production in some of the world's first large-scale industrial mills. The city was a major centre for locomotive engineering, with firms such as Hunslet Engine Company (founded 1864) producing railway engines exported across the world.

Inspiring STEM Role Models

Joseph Priestley, often associated with Birmingham, was born in Birstall near Leeds in 1733, and his early education in the region shaped the curiosity that would lead him to discover oxygen. The University of Leeds has produced leading researchers in medical engineering, including pioneering work in artificial hip joint replacements. Professor Catherine Noakes, who has spent her entire career at the University of Leeds, is a leading expert on airborne infection transmission whose work on the SAGE committee during the COVID-19 pandemic informed national ventilation guidelines, earning her an OBE in 2020 and election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021. More recently, Leeds has become a centre for fintech and health-tech innovation, producing entrepreneurs and researchers who are shaping the digital economy.

Leeds’s STEM Economy Today

Leeds today has one of the most dynamic economies in the north of England, with particular strengths in financial technology, digital services, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing. The city has over a thousand tech companies, with NHS Digital headquartered locally and a growing cluster of fintech firms driving demand for technology professionals. The Nexus innovation hub at the University of Leeds supports hundreds of startups. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the largest in Europe, works closely with the university on medical research and clinical technology.

STEM Career Pathways for Young People

Young people in Leeds have access to a growing range of STEM career pathways, from fintech and software engineering to medical technology and advanced manufacturing. HSBC, Barclays, and growing fintech firms actively recruit data analysts, software developers, and cybersecurity specialists through apprenticeships and graduate programmes. NHS Digital offers careers in health informatics, data science, and digital transformation. The University of Leeds is particularly renowned for its engineering, computing, and medical sciences faculties.

Investing in STEM Education in Leeds

Something interesting is happening in Leeds. A city best known for textiles and financial services has quietly become one of the north's most important digital and health-tech hubs. NHS Digital is headquartered here. Fintech is booming. The University of Leeds is producing world-class research in medical engineering and data science. But talk to employers and you hear the same refrain: they can't recruit fast enough. Software developers, data analysts, biomedical engineers, cybersecurity specialists. The list of hard-to-fill roles gets longer every year. For schools across West Yorkshire, this shouldn't feel like an abstract problem. It's a concrete opportunity for their students. Developing STEM skills now puts children on a direct path to some of the best-paid and most fulfilling careers the city has to offer.
