STEM in Newcastle: Why It Matters for Your Students

A History of Innovation

Newcastle and the North East have an extraordinary engineering heritage that helped drive the global industrial revolution. George Stephenson, born in Wylam in 1781, developed the Rocket locomotive which won the Rainhill Trials in 1829, establishing the template for steam railways worldwide. In 1878, Joseph Swan demonstrated his incandescent lightbulb at a lecture in Newcastle. His home in Gateshead is widely regarded as the first in the world lit by electric light. Sir Charles Parsons invented the modern steam turbine in 1884, a technology that generates the vast majority of the world's electricity.

Inspiring STEM Role Models

George Stephenson, the "Father of Railways," transformed transport and industry through his railway engineering achievements and independently developed the safety lamp. Joseph Swan's invention of the incandescent lightbulb and his partnership with Thomas Edison to form the Edison and Swan United Electric Light Company cemented the North East's role in the birth of electrical engineering. Sir Charles Parsons' invention of the steam turbine was arguably the single most important advance in power generation technology, dramatically demonstrated when his vessel Turbinia stunned observers at the 1897 Spithead Naval Review. Rachel Parsons, his daughter, worked at the family's C.A. Parsons & Co. engineering works in Newcastle and co-founded the Women's Engineering Society in 1919, opening doors for women in engineering at a time when the profession was almost entirely closed to them.

Newcastle’s STEM Economy Today

Newcastle and the North East today are at the forefront of the UK's offshore energy revolution. The Dogger Bank Wind Farm, currently under construction, is set to become the world's largest offshore wind farm, driving significant investment across the region. The Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, headquartered at Blyth, is the UK's leading innovation centre for offshore wind, wave, and tidal energy. Newcastle also has a growing digital sector, with Sage (one of the UK's largest tech companies, headquartered here) and the National Innovation Centre for Data driving innovation.

STEM Career Pathways for Young People

Young people in Newcastle have access to a rapidly expanding range of STEM career opportunities, particularly in offshore energy, subsea engineering, and digital technology. Equinor, SSE Renewables, and the ORE Catapult offer apprenticeships and graduate roles in wind turbine engineering and energy data analysis. Newcastle University's School of Engineering is recognised for marine technology and computing science. Sage and a growing number of start-ups provide roles in software development, data science, cybersecurity, and cloud computing.

Investing in STEM Education in Newcastle

The region that gave the world the steam railway, the incandescent lightbulb, and the steam turbine is now at the centre of the UK's offshore wind revolution. The Dogger Bank Wind Farm, under construction in the North Sea, will be the world's largest. The ORE Catapult at Blyth is the country's leading offshore energy innovation centre. Sage, one of Britain's biggest tech companies, has its headquarters here. The economic potential is enormous. But the North East faces a well-documented STEM skills gap, and the energy transition alone will require thousands of engineers, data scientists, and technicians that the region currently cannot supply. Schools that make STEM a genuine priority are doing more than enriching the curriculum. They're ensuring that local young people, not imported talent, are the ones who benefit from this transformation.
