STEM Workshops in Doncaster

The Great Northern Railway established its locomotive works, known locally as "The Plant", in 1853, and for over a century Doncaster built some of the finest and fastest locomotives ever made. The LNER Class A1 4472 Flying Scotsman, one of the most famous locomotives in history, was built at Doncaster Works in 1923. The LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard, also built at Doncaster in 1938, holds the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph, a record that has never been broken. Doncaster's engineering heritage also extends to coal mining, with the South Yorkshire coalfield supporting a major mining industry across the borough for well over a century.

Sir Nigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway from 1923 until his death in 1941, was based at Doncaster Works for much of his career. His designs, including the A1 Pacifics and the streamlined A4 class, represent some of the finest achievements in British locomotive engineering. Thomas Crapper, born in Thorne in the Doncaster borough in 1836, became a pioneering sanitary engineer in London. While he did not invent the flush toilet, his plumbing patents and his work improving public sanitation helped transform urban public health at a time when waterborne disease was a leading cause of death.

Doncaster has diversified from heavy industry into logistics technology and advanced distribution. iPort Doncaster, a major inland logistics hub near the M18, is one of the largest rail freight interchanges in Yorkshire and hosts distribution and warehousing operations, including Fellowes Inc's UK headquarters. The East Coast Main Line continues to make Doncaster an important rail hub, with Network Rail maintaining operations in the area. The University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre is within commuting distance, providing access to cutting-edge manufacturing technology research. Doncaster College, part of the DN Colleges Group, offers STEM courses in engineering, computing and construction.

Logistics technology at iPort and other distribution centres creates growing demand for robotics engineers, data analysts, software developers and supply chain technologists. Network Rail and train operating companies offer apprenticeships in railway engineering. The proximity of Sheffield and Leeds, both within 30 miles, significantly expands career options, with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University offering engineering and computing programmes. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre provides access to apprenticeship and research opportunities in aerospace and precision manufacturing.
