A History of Innovation
Doncaster is one of the most important railway engineering towns in the world. The Great Northern Railway established its locomotive works, known locally as "The Plant", in 1853, and for over a century Doncaster built some of the finest and fastest locomotives ever made. The LNER Class A1 4472 Flying Scotsman, one of the most famous locomotives in history, was built at Doncaster Works in 1923. The LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard, also built at Doncaster in 1938, holds the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph, a record that has never been broken. Doncaster's engineering heritage also extends to coal mining, with the South Yorkshire coalfield supporting a major mining industry across the borough for well over a century.
Inspiring STEM Role Models
Sir Nigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway from 1923 until his death in 1941, was based at Doncaster Works for much of his career. His designs, including the A1 Pacifics and the streamlined A4 class, represent some of the finest achievements in British locomotive engineering. Thomas Crapper, born in Thorne in the Doncaster borough in 1836, became a pioneering sanitary engineer in London.
