STEM in York: Why It Matters for Your Students

A History of Innovation

York has a deep engineering heritage centred on the railways, which transformed the city from a medieval market town into a major Victorian transport hub. The city became the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway and later a key location for British Rail, with the railway works at Holgate employing thousands of skilled engineers and craftsmen. York's confectionery industry, pioneered by Quaker families such as the Rowntrees and the Terrys, applied scientific principles to food production on an industrial scale. The National Railway Museum, the largest of its kind in the world, now preserves this engineering legacy.

Inspiring STEM Role Models

Joseph Rowntree and his son Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree combined industrial innovation with pioneering social research, with Seebohm's studies of poverty in York influencing the development of the welfare state. George Hudson, the "Railway King," was instrumental in making York a major railway centre in the 1840s, shaping the city's industrial identity for generations. Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who attended the Mount School in York before studying physics at the University of Glasgow and the University of Cambridge, is celebrated for her discovery of pulsars, one of the most important astronomical findings of the twentieth century.

York’s STEM Economy Today

The University of York is the driving force behind much of the city's modern STEM activity, with internationally recognised research departments in chemistry, biology, physics and computer science. York Science Park hosts technology and bioscience companies working in areas from digital health to environmental analytics. The city's digital and creative technology sector has grown significantly, supported by firms including Sopra Steria and Hiscox technology teams. The bioeconomy and green chemistry research at York, particularly through the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, positions the city as a leader in sustainable science.

STEM Career Pathways for Young People

Students in York can pursue STEM careers across rail engineering, digital technology, bioscience and environmental science. Network Rail maintains a significant presence in the city, offering apprenticeships and technical roles in railway infrastructure and signalling. The University of York's spin-out companies and the Science Park provide opportunities in diagnostics, data analytics and green chemistry. The growing digital sector offers routes into software development, cybersecurity and data science through both established firms and start-ups.

Investing in STEM Education in York

York's strengths in green chemistry and sustainable science directly address the environmental concerns that matter most to young people today. Network Rail runs major operations here. The University of York's research in chemistry and biology consistently ranks among the best in the country. The digital sector is expanding rapidly. But talk to employers and you hear a familiar refrain: not enough young people with strong foundations in science, computing and engineering. For schools across North Yorkshire, STEM enrichment connects students to career opportunities that are growing right on their doorstep.
