STEM Apprenticeships for Young People

Explore apprenticeship opportunities from leading UK employers in engineering, technology, defence and science. Earn while you learn and launch your STEM career.

STEM apprenticeships let you earn a salary while training for a career in science, technology, engineering or maths. Leading UK employers such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and GCHQ offer programmes from Level 3 (advanced) through to Level 6 (degree) apprenticeships, with starting salaries typically ranging from £15,000 to £29,000. This page brings together a curated directory of major employers, filterable by region and sector, to help students, parents and careers officers find the right opportunity.

Why STEM Apprenticeships Matter

The UK faces a significant shortage of skilled STEM workers, with an estimated 173,000 unfilled STEM vacancies each year. Apprenticeships provide a direct route into these high-demand careers, combining practical workplace experience with academic qualifications.

For young people considering their options after GCSEs or A-levels, a STEM apprenticeship offers a genuine alternative to university that can lead to equally rewarding careers, often with the added advantage of starting with no student debt and several years of professional experience.

Benefits

Why Consider a STEM Apprenticeship?

Earn While You Learn

Start earning a real salary from day one while gaining industry-recognised qualifications at no cost to you.

Gain Real Skills

Get hands-on experience working on real projects alongside industry professionals from your very first week.

No Student Debt

Degree apprenticeships give you a full bachelor’s degree with all tuition fees paid by the employer.

Career Progression

Many former apprentices hold senior leadership positions. Most STEM employers have retention rates above 90%.

Common Questions

STEM Apprenticeship FAQs

What is a STEM apprenticeship?

A STEM apprenticeship is a structured training programme where you earn a salary while gaining practical skills and qualifications in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job learning with academic study, and are offered at levels from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs) up to Level 7 (equivalent to a master's degree).

What age do you need to be to start an apprenticeship?

You must be at least 16 years old to start an apprenticeship in England. There is no upper age limit. Most STEM apprenticeships recruit school leavers aged 16 to 18, but many employers also welcome career changers and mature applicants.

What qualifications do you need for a STEM apprenticeship?

Entry requirements vary by level and employer. For Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeships, you typically need five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including maths, English and science. For degree apprenticeships (Level 6), you usually need A-levels or equivalent, often including maths and a science or technology subject.

How much do STEM apprentices get paid?

The national minimum apprentice wage applies, but most STEM employers pay significantly more. Starting salaries typically range from around £15,000 for Level 3 programmes to £22,000-£29,000 for degree apprenticeships. Some employers, such as Arm, offer £29,000 from day one.

Can you do a degree apprenticeship instead of going to university?

Yes. Degree apprenticeships (Level 6) allow you to earn a full bachelor's degree while working and earning a salary. Your tuition fees are paid by the employer, so you can graduate debt-free. Many leading STEM employers partner with Russell Group universities for their degree apprenticeship programmes.

How do I find STEM apprenticeships near me?

Use the employer directory on this page to filter by region and sector. You can also search the government's Find an Apprenticeship service at gov.uk, or visit individual employer career pages for the latest vacancies. Many employers recruit nationally with opportunities across multiple UK sites.

What is the difference between an apprenticeship and university?

At university, you study full-time and typically pay tuition fees (currently up to £9,250 per year). On an apprenticeship, you earn a salary from day one, gain hands-on work experience, and your training costs are covered by the employer. Degree apprenticeships combine both, giving you a full degree with no student debt.

Are STEM apprenticeships available in all UK regions?

Major STEM employers have sites across the UK, from Scotland to the South West. Some roles are concentrated in specific areas (such as aerospace in Bristol and Derby, or defence in Lancashire and Hampshire), while others like BT and National Grid offer roles nationwide. Use the filters above to find employers in your region.
