STEM Apprenticeships for Young People

A STEM apprenticeship is a structured training programme where you earn a salary while gaining practical skills and qualifications in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job learning with academic study, and are offered at levels from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs) up to Level 7 (equivalent to a master's degree).

You must be at least 16 years old to start an apprenticeship in England. There is no upper age limit. Most STEM apprenticeships recruit school leavers aged 16 to 18, but many employers also welcome career changers and mature applicants.

Entry requirements vary by level and employer. For Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeships, you typically need five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including maths, English and science. For degree apprenticeships (Level 6), you usually need A-levels or equivalent, often including maths and a science or technology subject.

The national minimum apprentice wage applies, but most STEM employers pay significantly more. Starting salaries typically range from around £15,000 for Level 3 programmes to £22,000-£29,000 for degree apprenticeships. Some employers, such as Arm, offer £29,000 from day one.

Yes. Degree apprenticeships (Level 6) allow you to earn a full bachelor's degree while working and earning a salary. Your tuition fees are paid by the employer, so you can graduate debt-free. Many leading STEM employers partner with Russell Group universities for their degree apprenticeship programmes.

At university, you study full-time and typically pay tuition fees (currently up to £9,250 per year). On an apprenticeship, you earn a salary from day one, gain hands-on work experience, and your training costs are covered by the employer.
