STEM in Sutton Coldfield: Why It Matters for Your Students
What is Sutton Coldfield’s STEM heritage?
The man who made Sutton Coldfield a royal town was a churchman, not an engineer. Bishop John Vesey, thought to be a native of the town, who rose to become Bishop of Exeter, was instrumental in securing a royal charter from Henry VIII in December 1528 making it the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, then paved its streets, built 51 stone houses and gave the town its grammar school and Sutton Park. Its engineering landmark came four centuries later. On 17 December 1949, the Sutton Coldfield transmitting station became the first television transmitter to broadcast outside London and the Home Counties, bringing BBC Television to the Midlands with a 50 kilowatt vision transmitter operating on the 405-line standard; by population served, it remains the third most important transmitter in the country.
Which STEM role models are linked to Sutton Coldfield?
Lucy Wills was born in Sutton Coldfield in 1888 and became a haematologist. Researching macrocytic anaemia of pregnancy in Bombay in the late 1920s and early 1930s, she identified a nutrient in yeast, later named the Wills factor and shown to be folate, that prevented and cured the disease, and she went on to establish the first haematology department at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Raymond Neil Wilson was born in the town in 1928 and became head of optics and telescopes at the European Southern Observatory, where he pioneered active optics, a technique for continuously reshaping a telescope's mirror that is now the basic principle behind large modern telescopes; he shared the 2010 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics for his contributions to giant telescopes.
What STEM industries are in Sutton Coldfield?
Sutton Coldfield's 1949 transmitter is still the West Midlands' main broadcast mast, now transmitting digital television at 200 kilowatts. Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, serves Sutton Coldfield, north Birmingham and a large part of south east Staffordshire. To the north east, Peddimore, an employment site being developed by IM Properties as Birmingham City Council's partner, welcomed its first occupier in 2023, a 2.3 million square foot Amazon fulfilment centre that employs around 3,000 people at peak times.
What STEM career opportunities are available for young people in Sutton Coldfield?
BMet's Sutton Coldfield College campus teaches A levels alongside vocational qualifications, T levels, apprenticeships and adult courses, and was the college's only campus teaching A levels at its 2023 Ofsted inspection. Good Hope Hospital houses a Partnership Learning Centre part-funded by the University of Birmingham's Medical School. At Peddimore, Rockwool has bought land to build a manufacturing hub alongside the Amazon site.
Why is STEM education important in Sutton Coldfield?
Sutton Coldfield has produced people who worked at the edge of what was possible: a doctor who showed how a dangerous anaemia of pregnancy could be prevented and cured, and a physicist whose active optics underpin today's giant telescopes. A hands-on workshop day, building robots, flying drones or training an AI model, gives today's pupils an early, practical taste of the same kind of problem solving, regardless of whether their family has any connection to science or engineering. For headteachers, it is a concrete way to widen what pupils believe they could become.
