What is Torbay’s STEM heritage?
Torbay's three towns share a genuine claim on the history of science. In Kents Cavern, Torquay, the geologist William Pengelly led an excavation from 1865 to 1880, digging through stalagmite floors to reveal the tools of early humans alongside the bones of extinct animals. A jawbone fragment found there in 1927 was redated in 2011 to around 41,500 to 44,200 years old, among the oldest modern human fossils found in Britain. Recognising 400 million years of geology across the bay, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham together became a Global Geopark in 2007, now the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark. In 1872, the engineer and naval architect William Froude built the first ship-testing tank at his Torquay home, using scale models to predict how full-sized hulls would behave at sea.
Which STEM role models are linked to Torbay?
William Pengelly, born in Cornwall in 1812, moved to Torquay in his twenties and became the largely self-taught geologist whose Kents Cavern excavations showed humans had coexisted with extinct animals; he was among the founding members of the Torquay Natural History Society in 1844 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1863. William Froude, who set out reliable laws for the resistance water offers to ships and invented the water brake dynamometer in 1877, built his ship-testing tank at his Torquay home in 1872, and his methods are still followed in naval architecture today. Isaac Singer, the American inventor who patented his improved sewing machine in 1851, settled in Paignton in 1871 and built Oldway Mansion there; he died in Paignton in 1875.

South Devon College, based at Vantage Point in Paignton, was rated Good overall by Ofsted following an inspection in April 2024, with education programmes for young people rated Outstanding, and its Paignton campus is home to University Centre South Devon, a University of Plymouth partner institution. Nearby, South Devon UTC in Newton Abbot specialises in engineering and health sciences, with employer partners including the NHS. Paignton Zoo, which opened in 1923, passed from the charity Wild Planet Trust to the Dutch leisure company Libéma in January 2026, and Libéma says it remains committed to conservation. The English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, covering the whole of Torbay plus 41.5 square kilometres of sea, offers outdoor field work and school visits across the bay.
