What is Portsmouth’s STEM heritage?
Portsmouth's Royal Dockyard is where the age of mass production began. From 1803, under Samuel Bentham, Inspector General of Naval Works, Marc Isambard Brunel's designs were built by Henry Maudslay into the Portsmouth Block Mills, a set of metal machine tools that made the wooden pulley blocks the Royal Navy's sailing ships needed; by 1808 the mills turned out 130,000 blocks a year, and 10 men could produce as many blocks as 110 skilled craftsmen. Herbert Edward Vosper founded Vosper & Company, a Portsmouth shipbuilder, in 1871 to repair and refit ships; the firm moved to a yard at Portchester in 1936, merged with John I. Thornycroft & Company in 1966, and moved its shipbuilding back to Portsmouth in 2003. BAE Systems, which later took over the business, ended shipbuilding in Portsmouth in 2014 but still maintains Royal Navy ships at the naval base.
Which STEM role models are linked to Portsmouth?
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the engineer of the Great Western Railway and designer of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, was born in Portsea, Portsmouth, in 1806. Hertha Ayrton, born in the same district in 1854, registered 26 patents including a line divider and, for her research into the electric arc, became the first woman to win the Royal Society's Hughes Medal, in 1906. Robert Cockburn, born in Portsmouth in 1909, headed the wartime radio countermeasures team whose devices, including the radar-jamming Window, greatly reduced RAF bomber losses, and worked on the D-Day deception operations Taxable and Glimmer.

In 2024 BAE Systems employed around 2,000 people at Portsmouth Naval Base, maintaining 19 Royal Navy vessels including two aircraft carriers, six Type 45 destroyers and two Type 23 frigates, under a five year, £900 million contract awarded in 2021. QinetiQ's facility at Portsdown Technology Park in Portsmouth represents a combined investment of over £100 million, and the company is the Royal Navy's contracted technical partner for combat system integration, testing and evaluation. All of the research of the University of Portsmouth's Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation was judged world-leading or internationally excellent in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, and the institute plays a role in the European Space Agency's Euclid mission. In February 2024 the University and BAE Systems launched the UK's first degree apprenticeship in space systems engineering.

City of Portsmouth College, formed in 2021 from the merger of Highbury and Portsmouth Colleges, teaches engineering from a Level 2 diploma to a Level 3 extended diploma in advanced manufacturing engineering, with mechanical, electronic and rail pathways, and its engineering students have built a hovercraft with Hovertravel. The University of Portsmouth has a School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and a School of Computing, Mathematics and Physics, and since 2024 has offered the UK's first space systems engineering degree apprenticeship with BAE Systems, combining Portsmouth study with workplace training at BAE's sites in Alton and Guildford.
