What is Kidderminster & Bromsgrove’s STEM heritage?
Kidderminster grew into a carpet-making town. Carpet weaving arrived in the early 18th century and rapidly became the staple trade, and Brintons began making carpet there in 1783, patenting the Axminster loom in 1890. By 1951 more than thirty carpet manufacturers worked in the town, which gave its name to the reversible "Kidderminster carpet". The Museum of Carpet, opened in 2012 in Stour Vale Mill, is run by volunteers and still holds power-loom demonstrations. A few miles east, Bromsgrove built a different trade: nail making, recorded there in the 17th century and employing 900 hands by 1778, before mechanisation put the trade into decline from the 1840s.

Sir Rowland Hill, born in Blackwell Street, is remembered in his home town as the inventor of the Penny Black and the modern postal system.
