What is Stirling & Perth’s STEM heritage?
Perth built its Victorian economy on dyeing and whisky. The J. Pullar and Sons dyeworks on Mill Street was at one time Perth's largest industry, and the building still stands in the city centre as Pullar House, converted in 2000 into offices for Perth and Kinross Council. In 1846, John Dewar opened a wine and spirits merchant shop in Perth, from which grew John Dewar and Sons, later remembered as one of the country's big three whisky blenders. Stirling's own Victorian firms exported far afield: one riverside company sold reaping machines as far as Syria and Australia, and from 1861 another made baby carriages exported to Canada, South America, India and South Africa.
Which STEM role models are linked to Stirling & Perth?
David Douglas, born in Scone near Perth in 1799, served his gardening apprenticeship at Scone Palace before becoming a plant collector, introducing around 240 plant species to Britain, including the Douglas fir, which he introduced into cultivation in 1827. Robert Graham, born in Stirling in 1786, became the first Professor of Botany at Glasgow in 1818 and went on to run the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as Regius Keeper from 1820 until his death in 1845. Daniel Edwin Rutherford, born in Stirling in 1906 and schooled at Perth Academy, became a mathematician at the University of St Andrews, publishing his best-known book, Substitutional Analysis, in 1948 and holding the Gregory Chair of Applied Mathematics from 1964.
What STEM industries are in Stirling & Perth?
The University of Stirling's Institute of Aquaculture, which describes itself as the largest centre of its kind in the world, researches fish farming and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate aquaculture degrees.
