What is Stockport’s STEM heritage?
Stockport built its identity on hats and railways. Hatmaking was established in the area by the 16th century, and in 1826 the London firm Miller Christy bought a local hat-making business as the trade grew through the nineteenth century; by 1884 the hatting industry centred on Stockport was exporting more than six million hats a year, and in 1932 the industry still employed over 3,000 people, the town's third-biggest employer after textiles and engineering. The last two factories, Wilson's and Christy's, closed in 1980 and 1997, ending over 400 years of local hatmaking; Wellington Mill, built as a cotton mill in 1830 to 1831 and later a hat works, is now the Hat Works museum. Above the town, Stockport Viaduct, completed in 1840 from 11 million bricks across 27 arches in only 21 months, still carries four railway tracks over the River Mersey.
Which STEM role models are linked to Stockport?
Joseph Whitworth, born in Stockport in 1803, pursued mechanical precision throughout his career. His 1841 standard for screw threads, later known as British Standard Whitworth, became the first nationally standardised screw thread system, and his measuring techniques could resolve one millionth of an inch. Horace Lamb, born in Stockport in 1849, became an applied mathematician awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1923, holding a chair at Manchester from 1885 to 1920; his 1895 textbook Hydrodynamics was for many years the standard work on the subject.
