What is Basingstoke’s STEM heritage?
Much of Basingstoke's industrial history was built on wheels. In 1898 the Thornycroft Steam Wagon Company opened a factory in the town, building steam lorries and vans for a business that had begun in Chiswick, and in 1899 its steam wagons were supplied to the Army for the first time. Thornycroft built its first petrol vehicle in 1902 and made high quality cars at Basingstoke from 1903 to 1912, and the factory supplied nearly 5,000 motor vehicles for the First World War effort. Taken over by Associated Commercial Vehicles, which Leyland acquired in 1962, the works stopped building vehicles in 1969. The Milestones Museum in Basingstoke now displays many Thornycroft vehicles and a re-creation of part of the factory.
Which STEM role models are linked to Basingstoke?
Nora Stanton Barney was born in Basingstoke in 1883 and went on to become, in 1905, Cornell University's first female engineering graduate and the first woman admitted to the American Society of Civil Engineers; she worked as a civil engineer on bridges and other infrastructure and campaigned for women's suffrage. Rebecca George, born in the town in 1961, spent nearly twenty years at IBM before joining Deloitte as a partner in 2006, and was inaugurated as President of the British Computer Society in March 2020; she has long encouraged girls and women into technology, and was appointed OBE in 2006 and CBE in 2023.
What STEM industries are in Basingstoke?
De La Rue, founded in 1821 and today a security printer that prints banknotes for half of the world's central banks, is headquartered in Basingstoke; in July 2025 the American investment firm Atlas Holdings completed its takeover of the company. The AA moved its headquarters in October 2024 from Fanum House, its Basingstoke home since 1972, to new offices at Plant on Basing View, and in March 2026 opened a Patrol Training Academy in the town. Basingstoke College of Technology runs engineering apprenticeships, and the charity training provider Basingstoke ITEC runs cyber security, IT and digital apprenticeships.
