Hyett Education Ltd (Companies House number 11079223). Trading address: Unit 11, Four Ashes Enterprise Centre, Wolverhampton WV10 7BY.
Statement of intent
Hyett Education delivers hands-on STEM workshops in schools across the UK, using equipment such as robots, drones, electricity kits and computers. We are committed to protecting the health and safety of the pupils and school staff we work with, our own staff and freelance instructors, and anyone else affected by what we do.
We will:
- assess the risks of every workshop activity and put sensible controls in place;
- provide safe, well-maintained equipment and remove anything damaged from service;
- give instructors full training on workshop content, equipment and delivery techniques;
- plan travel so that journeys are manageable and safe;
- record and learn from every incident and near miss;
- consult the people who deliver our workshops on matters that affect their safety;
- comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the regulations made under it; and
- reduce the environmental impact of our work where we reasonably can.

Responsibilities
- Antony Hyett, Chief Executive, has overall responsibility for health, safety and environmental performance, and for making sure this policy has the time and resources it needs. He is also responsible for day-to-day arrangements, keeping risk assessments up to date, and running the equipment checks described below.
- Instructors (employed and freelance) follow this policy, the activity risk assessment and their training; carry out pre-use equipment checks; stop any activity they believe is unsafe; and report incidents, near misses and defects.
- Schools keep their duty of care for pupils at all times. As set out in our terms, the school provides the agreed room, furniture and power, a member of school staff who remains present throughout, and its own supervision, safeguarding, emergency and venue arrangements.
Activity risk assessments
Hyett Education provides the activity risk assessment for every booked workshop. Risk assessments are updated annually. The school remains responsible for its own venue assessment and emergency procedures, and we ask schools to tell us at least one week before the workshop about any pupils with additional needs, so that we can adapt the session plan with the school.
Instructors aim to arrive 75 to 90 minutes before the first session to set up, check the room and walk through any site-specific issues with school staff.
Equipment
Specialist equipment is inspected and maintained under our procedures and relevant manufacturer guidance.
- Before each use, instructors check every item for damage, loose parts and correct operation. Damaged items are removed from service, labelled and returned for repair or disposal.
Travel
Travel is a core part of an instructor's role, and instructor roles require a full UK driving licence. We plan schedules sensibly to keep journeys manageable. Equipment is loaded and secured for transit. Drivers must not use a hand-held phone while driving and must take breaks on longer journeys. On arrival, instructors sign in at reception, carry photo ID and follow the school's visitor procedures.
Incidents, first aid and reporting
- In an emergency, instructors follow the school's procedures and the direction of school staff. The school's first aid arrangements apply on site.
- Any accident, injury, near miss or equipment fault during a workshop is reported to the member of school staff present straight away and to Hyett Education.
- We record each incident, investigate the cause, and update the risk assessment, equipment or training if needed.
- We report incidents to the Health and Safety Executive where the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR) require it.
- Safeguarding concerns are not handled under this policy. They are raised straight away using the route on our safeguarding page.
Insurance
We hold public liability insurance of £10 million. Confirmation is included in your booking documents in the secure booking portal.
Environment
Our main environmental impacts come from travel to schools, the equipment we use and the waste it creates. We have not measured our carbon emissions and do not publish figures or targets. Our commitments are practical:
- Travel: we plan delivery days to keep journeys manageable.
- Equipment reuse: our workshop kits are durable and reused across many workshops. We repair equipment where we can before replacing it.
- Paper and materials: booking documents and risk assessments are shared digitally in the secure booking portal. Where pupils take part in a make activity, we choose materials that can be reused or recycled where we can.
- Office: we switch off equipment when it is not in use.
Review
This policy is reviewed by October 2027, and sooner after a significant incident, a change in the law, or a change in the activities or equipment we use.
