STEM in Hull: Why It Matters for Your Students

A History of Innovation

Hull's industrial identity was forged through centuries of maritime trade, deep-sea fishing and shipbuilding, with the city once operating one of the largest distant-water fishing fleets in the world. The city was a pioneer in telecommunications; Hull is unique in the UK for having its own independent telephone network, established in 1902 as Kingston Communications, which later evolved into KCOM. During both World Wars, Hull's strategic port made it a vital hub for engineering and logistics.

Inspiring STEM Role Models

William Wilberforce, born in Hull in 1759, is best known for his role in abolishing the slave trade, but his legacy also reflects the city's long tradition of progressive civic leadership. Amy Johnson, the pioneering aviator who flew solo from England to Australia in 1930, grew up in Hull before earning her pilot's licence and ground engineer's certificate. More recently, researchers at the University of Hull have made significant contributions to chemistry, environmental science and flood resilience research.

Hull’s STEM Economy Today

Hull has transformed itself into a leading centre for offshore wind energy, anchored by the Siemens Gamesa blade manufacturing facility at Alexandra Dock, which produces turbine blades for major North Sea wind farms. The Humber Freeport and associated Green Energy Park are attracting further investment in hydrogen production, carbon capture and renewable energy supply chains. Reckitt, the global consumer health and hygiene company headquartered in Hull, employs thousands locally in research, manufacturing and digital roles. The C4DI (Centre for Digital Innovation) tech hub houses dozens of technology start-ups and scale-ups.

STEM Career Pathways for Young People

The offshore wind sector offers structured career routes from blade technician and turbine engineer apprenticeships at Siemens Gamesa through to project management and marine logistics roles. Reckitt's Hull campus provides graduate schemes and placements in research and development, supply chain engineering and data analytics. The C4DI hub creates pathways into software development, cybersecurity, network engineering and digital product design. The University of Hull offers well-regarded programmes in engineering, computer science and environmental science.

Investing in STEM Education in Hull

Hull is at the forefront of the UK's green energy transition. Siemens Gamesa manufactures wind turbine blades at Alexandra Dock. The Humber Freeport is attracting billions in investment. Reckitt runs its global operations from here. The Humber region is projected to support tens of thousands of new jobs in offshore wind, hydrogen and decarbonisation over the coming decades. For schools in Hull and East Yorkshire, STEM education isn't aspirational. It's the direct pathway to careers that are being created right now, in industries that will define the region's future.
