Swansea was once the copper-smelting capital of the world, processing ore from across the globe in the Lower Swansea Valley throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The region's metallurgical expertise expanded into tinplate manufacturing, earning South West Wales the nickname "Tinopolis" and supplying the canning industry worldwide. At Port Talbot, heavy-end iron and steelmaking ceased in September 2024; rolling operations continue, and a new electric arc furnace is planned to restore lower-carbon steelmaking.

William Robert Grove, born in Swansea in 1811, invented the fuel cell and made significant contributions to electrochemistry that anticipated modern clean energy technologies by more than a century. Richard Trevithick tested early high-pressure steam engines in the South Wales coalfield. Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott, who held the Chair in Microbiology at Swansea University from 2010, is a world authority on microbial biofilms who served as the first UK President of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies and was awarded an OBE in 2018 for services to microbiology and the advancement of women in science and engineering. The region's metallurgical tradition produced generations of engineers and scientists whose expertise shaped Britain's industrial development.

Swansea hosts major employers including the DVLA, Amazon's fulfilment operations and Admiral Group, alongside a growing health technology cluster anchored by Swansea University's Institute of Life Science. The Swansea Bay City Deal is investing over one billion pounds across the region, funding projects in digital infrastructure, smart manufacturing and renewable energy innovation.

Young people in Swansea can access careers in data science, health technology and renewable energy engineering. Swansea University offers degree programmes in engineering, computer science and medical technology with strong industry placement partnerships. The region's manufacturing base provides apprenticeship routes into advanced welding, process engineering and quality management, while the growing digital sector creates demand for software developers, cybersecurity analysts and UX designers.
