What is Slough’s STEM heritage?
Slough's trading estate began with an accident of war. In 1918 the government bought land west of the town for an army motor repair depot, and when peace made it redundant the Government Surplus Disposal Board sold the 600-acre site, complete with 17,000 used vehicles, to investors led by Sir Percival Perry and Sir Noel Mobbs. The Slough Trading Company Act 1925 let their company, renamed Slough Estates in 1926, turn it into an industrial estate. Manufacturing had already arrived: James Horlick opened a purpose-built factory near the railway station in 1906 to make his malted milk drink, and in 1932 Forrest Mars Sr set up the Slough factory that gave the world the Mars bar.
Which STEM role models are linked to Slough?
Slough's scientific reputation was made more than a century before its trading estate. William Herschel, who had discovered Uranus in 1781, moved to Windsor Road in Slough in 1786 and built a 40-foot telescope there with £4,000 from George III, using it in 1789 to discover Saturn's moons Mimas and Enceladus. His sister Caroline worked alongside him, discovering eight comets between 1786 and 1797 and becoming, in 1787, the first woman to be paid for her work in astronomy. In 1828 she became the first woman awarded the Royal Astronomical Society's Gold Medal, an honour no other woman received until 1996. William served as the King's Astronomer and died at Observatory House in Slough in 1822.
