Electric street lighting reached Blackpool's promenade in 1879, and the seafront Illuminations that grew from it were launched in 1912 and extended in 1925. Blackpool Tower, completed in 1894 at 518 feet, was the tallest man-made structure in the British Empire when it opened. At Squires Gate, October 1909 brought the UK's first official public flying meeting; the airfield was requisitioned by the Air Ministry in 1938, 769,673 recruits received their basic training in Blackpool during the Second World War, and a Vickers shadow factory on the airfield built 2,584 Wellington bombers between 1940 and 1945.
Which STEM role models are linked to Blackpool & the Fylde?
Michael Smith, born in Blackpool in 1932, later worked at the University of British Columbia in Canada and shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to site-directed mutagenesis, a technique that lets scientists deliberately alter genes at chosen points in a DNA sequence. William Lyons, born in Blackpool in 1901, founded the Swallow Sidecar Company with William Walmsley in the town in 1922; the business moved to Coventry in 1928, became SS Cars in 1933, and after the Second World War was renamed Jaguar, the company Lyons led until he retired as chairman in 1972.
What STEM industries are in Blackpool & the Fylde?
BAE Systems' Warton site, on the Fylde, is where final assembly of 20 Eurofighter Typhoons ordered by Turkiye in October 2025 will take place, continuing the aviation engineering the Fylde coast has hosted since 1909. Blackpool and The Fylde College, whose honours degrees are validated by Lancaster University, began building a new town-centre Multiversity campus in May 2026 for 3,000 students, apprentices and staff, due to open in September 2028.

Blackpool and The Fylde College is a local route into further and higher education: its honours degrees are validated by Lancaster University, and its Fleetwood Nautical College trains officer cadets and delivers safety, survival and fire training to the Merchant Navy, offshore oil and gas and renewables industries.
