What is Redditch’s STEM heritage?
Redditch built its name on needles. By the Victorian era the town dominated the world needle trade, with a fishing-tackle industry alongside it, and it once produced 90 percent of the world's needles. Forge Mill, an old iron forge converted into a needle-scouring mill in 1730, closed in 1958; Queen Elizabeth II attended its opening as the Forge Mill Needle Museum in 1983, and it is now the only water-powered needle-scouring mill left in the world. The town's other export was the motorcycle: the Enfield Cycle Company, run in Redditch by Albert Eadie and Robert Walker Smith, built its first Royal Enfield motorcycle in 1901 and made bicycles, motorcycles and lawnmowers until the Redditch works closed in 1967, after production had already begun in India.
Which STEM role models are linked to Redditch?
Redditch-born William Valentine Mayneord (born 1902) became a pioneer of medical physics: at the Cancer Hospital, now the Royal Marsden, he was responsible for bringing the rad into use as a unit of radiation dose, and his department developed one of the world's first radioisotope scanners. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1965. The town's engineering history is also tied to the two men who built the Royal Enfield business: after a Redditch cycle maker collapsed financially in 1891, Robert Walker Smith, an engineer from D. Rudge & Co, and Albert Eadie, sales manager at Perry & Co, were chosen to run it and built it into the Enfield Cycle Company, maker of the Royal Enfield motorcycle.

Thorpe plc, admitted to the London Stock Exchange's AIM market in 2006, designs and manufactures professional lighting systems from its Merse Road headquarters at North Moons Moat, trading through brands including Thorlux Lighting and employing more than 800 people across its group.
