STEM in Mansfield: Why It Matters for Your Students

What is Mansfield’s STEM heritage?

Mansfield grew up on framework knitting. Hosiers and framesmiths built the trade from the early eighteenth century, and by 1812 the town had 400 stocking frames at work; wide frames, introduced in the 1770s and resisted elsewhere, were taken up readily in Mansfield and neighbouring Sutton-in-Ashfield. Coal mining grew through the nineteenth century, with Sherwood Colliery opening at Mansfield Woodhouse in 1902 and Crown Farm Colliery at Forest Town in 1904. Mansfield Brewery began brewing in 1855. The town's own magnesian limestone, quarried locally as Mansfield stone, had already gone into Southwell Minster and Bolsover Castle's keep before being selected in 1839 for part of the new Palace of Westminster, though Yorkshire's Anston stone became the main material. Locally dug moulding sand, valued for its quality, grew into an export trade, while founding and precision engineering rose in the town, powered by coal and iron from nearby mines.

Which STEM role models are linked to Mansfield?

Leonard Rotherham (1913 to 2001) was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield and studied at University College London. He worked as a physicist on high-melting-point alloys at Brown Firth Research Laboratories from 1935, then led the Metallurgy Department at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, from 1946. There he led the team that investigated the de Havilland Comet airliner crashes, which were caused by metal fatigue around the windows. He went on to direct research for the UK Atomic Energy Authority's Industrial Group at Risley, sit on the Central Electricity Generating Board, and serve as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath from 1969 to 1976. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1963.

What STEM industries are in Mansfield?

Amazon's fulfilment centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield opened in 2020 and by December 2022 had more than 1,000 permanent employees working alongside Amazon Robotics systems.
