STEM in Telford: Why It Matters for Your Students

A History of Innovation

Telford pupils live beside the ground where the Industrial Revolution caught fire. At Coalbrookdale in 1709, Abraham Darby I, born near Dudley, pioneered smelting iron with coke rather than charcoal, unlocking the mass production that reshaped the world. Two generations later his grandson, Abraham Darby III, raised the Iron Bridge across the Severn gorge in 1779, the world's first major iron bridge, and it still stands today. The whole Ironbridge Gorge is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described by UNESCO as the symbol of the Industrial Revolution. The modern town followed in 1968, when the expanded new town took the name of engineer Thomas Telford.

Inspiring STEM Role Models

Few English towns are named after an engineer. Thomas Telford, the Scottish-born mason who became Surveyor of Public Works for Shropshire in 1787, went on to build roads, canals and some forty bridges across the county, and served as the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers. When the new town was created, it took his name. Before him came the Darby dynasty of Coalbrookdale ironmasters, including Abraham Darby III, who cast and raised the Iron Bridge itself. The lineage continues today at Harper Adams University near Newport, where engineers Kit Franklin and Jonathan Gill conceived the Hands Free Hectare, the world's first crop farmed entirely by autonomous machines.
