A Year 6 pupil debugging a robot is not doing an engineer's job. They are, however, testing instructions, spotting faults and improving a system. Those habits appear across many STEM careers. Connecting the task to real work helps pupils see more than a list of unfamiliar job titles. It shows them what people do, which skills matter and which next steps they could explore.

What careers are included in STEM?

The category is much broader than scientist, programmer and engineer. It includes technicians, drone pilots, data specialists, CAD designers, electricians, animators, surveyors, safety professionals and project teams. Many jobs combine disciplines.

This is why job families are more useful than a single career match. A pupil can explore the people surrounding a problem, not decide their future from one classroom activity.

How do workshop tasks connect to real STEM careers?

A workshop task can reveal a small but recognisable part of working practice. The connection should be presented as an invitation to investigate, not a promise that completing the task prepares someone for employment.

  • Building and debugging a robot uses sequencing, testing and systems thinking. Related teams include robotics engineers, automation technicians, programmers and test engineers.
  • Coding a drone route uses spatial reasoning, planning and careful checking. Drone pilots plan flights and test equipment, while surveyors and mapping specialists interpret the collected data.
  • Training an image-recognition model involves selecting data, testing results and discussing errors. Data scientists gather information, test models and explain findings to different audiences.
  • Breaking and protecting codes develops logical reasoning and attention to detail. Cyber teams also investigate evidence, secure systems, document their work and explain risks clearly.
  • Creating a CAD model requires measurement, visualisation and revision. CAD technicians produce technical drawings, correct inaccuracies and work with engineers and project staff.
  • Building and testing a circuit involves diagnosis, safe working and persistence. Electrical engineers and technicians test systems, analyse results and plan maintenance.
  • Making a stop-motion film combines storyboarding, timing and digital production. Animators, editors, lighting teams and technical artists contribute different skills to a finished sequence.

Which skills matter in STEM jobs?

STEM jobs require technical knowledge, but workplace profiles repeatedly include skills that pupils can recognise in classroom work. These include problem-solving, precision, teamwork, communication, reasoning and learning from test results.

Teachers can make the connection explicit with three prompts:

  1. What problem were you trying to solve?
  2. What did you change after testing your first idea?
  3. What evidence helped your team decide what to do next?

The strongest answer is not always "I finished first". A pupil who found a fault, recorded results or explained a difficult idea has useful evidence about their contribution.

Do you need a university degree for a STEM career?

No, not every STEM career requires a university degree. Entry routes vary by occupation and can include apprenticeships, college courses, technical qualifications, university study or progression from a junior role.

Official profiles list several routes into roles such as CAD technician, animator and electrical engineer. Pupils should check current requirements for the role and nation that interest them.

How can schools make STEM careers feel possible?

Schools can make career learning more useful by connecting tasks to pupils' lives, showing varied roles and avoiding the idea that someone must be a "science person" from an early age. UCL's Science Capital Teaching Approach similarly encourages teachers to make science more relevant and value what pupils already bring.

In England, this work can contribute to Gatsby Benchmark 4, which asks subject staff to link curriculum learning with careers. One workshop does not automatically satisfy a benchmark, count as workplace experience or replace impartial careers guidance. It becomes more valuable when teachers prepare pupils, name the skills during the activity and revisit possible roles afterwards.

Yes. The skills used in a job may travel, but careers frameworks, qualifications, apprenticeship systems and advice services differ across the four nations.
